Hello World!

My name is Sara. I’m 18 years old and from Rome, Italy. Most people are surprised when I say this due to the lack of representation of minority Italians but we exist :). My favourite part about being Italian is definitely the family oriented culture, the beautiful range of climates and landscapes and the food especially Southern Islander italian food.

When I was around 4 years old my family began to move quite frequently due to my Dad’s career. This led me to move across continents, living in Africa, the US and Europe. While moving around had its positives and negatives, I owe it to my Dad that I’m able to speak four languages and got to have a taste of so many different cultures in my early life. However, this hasn’t made it any easier for me to define my identity.

Going to international schools has made me very familiar with the identity of the third culture kid. I often find a mix of my identity being between my parent’s culture, the host culture of the countries I lived in and the International mindset I was exposed through by school and the friend I made.

Stick figure standing with a suitcase, dotted lines showing lots of traveling location on the maps: Caption says ” An accurate depiction of what happens in my brain when someone asks me where I’m from.”

I completed my first year of studies in a similar course, Arts Culture and Media at the University of Groningen, in the northernmost city in the Netherlands, Groningen, exactly here.

I really liked it there but I felt I wanted a more practical approach and to study something which could open more doors creatively. The lack of work opportunities in the creative industries especially for an international student is what led to my decision to transfer to studying Digital Media and Communications at University of Westminster.

Signing off,

Sara
